Tongan Akau Tau Club-Polynesian Weapon-Oceanic Art-Seymour Lazar
Too few art objects invite you to pick them up, feel their heft in the hand, are carved to be gripped securely and are weighted and balanced to be swung, not in play or sport, but with aggression and malice. This ancient and beautiful Tongan Akau tau club looks elegant fitted in its display base and sitting stoically on a pedestal but its true primeval nature can only be understood when firmly grasped. Aesthetically the club is exceptional for its four long-legged human figure glyphs and the numerous other bird, crescent and star motifs. The piece comes from the Seymour Lazar Collection, is ex. Peter Adler London and dates to the early 19th century. It is 47” (119.4 cm) in length. SOLD
