Marquesas Islands Stilt Step-Polynesian Art-Oceanic Tribal Art
Here is a large and fine Marquesas Islands stilt-step “tapuvae.” As I mentioned previously, I really think these stilt-steps are wonderful pieces of Polynesian Art with old, full tiki figures of often great power with pleasing worn brown patinas. The eyes on this example are beautifully rendered with slightly arched form mirrored by the brow. The mouth is typically flat and grim, the body is robust with delicate grooved lines. The tapuvae comes from a Los Angeles private collection, dates to the mid 19th century or earlier, stands 15 5/8” (39.5 cm) in height. SOLD
