Malekula Spear Point Head-Vanuatu-Melanesian Art-Oceanic Art
I think the Janus heads from Malekula Island spears are some of the most interestingly and engaging faces in Oceanic art. The stylized faces juxtapose rounded volumes, sharp angles and deep recesses to create expression out of the abstract. The present example is a case in point with a somber downcast gaze. The patina is dark brown and very old. The spear section dates to the late 19th century, is 14 ¼” (36.1 cm) in height and the price is $4800.
