Two Massim Lime Spatulas-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
Here are a pair of old and fine Massim lime spatulas. The left one is topped by a stylized bird with a long, elegant beak. The righthand spatula has two stacked figures with arms transformed into birds that nestle under the chin. There is delicate openwork between the limbs of these two figures. Both spatulas have nice remains of white lime that accentuate the carved details in the dark ebony wood. These two date to the late 19th century, were collected over 50 years ago by a cultural anthropologist and come from a Pennsylvania private collection. The left is 12” (30.4 cm)SOLD, the right is 18 5/8” (47.2 cm) in height and sells for $3000.
