Middle Ramu River Shield-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art
Here is a fine, old Ramu River shield I found through my newspaper ad campaign in Vancouver in January 2017. It was collected in 1965 by David Cook, a Canadian who was in New Guinea on a caving expedition. The shield is unusual for both having a nice graphic design and the cane waist band intact. In addition, there are a couple arrow points still embedded in the front showing this shield has served its original purpose in a fine manner. Notice the beautifully adze-scalloped backside with aged patina. The shield dates to the early 20th century, is 49 ½” (125.7 cm) in height and sells for $8500.
