New Guinea Spears-Sepik River-Abelam-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Weapon
New Guinea spears are underappreciated—probably due to their imposing length and difficulty in photographing. Here are six of my best from the Sepik River, April River, Sawos and Abelam cultures. The far left has a metal blade fashioned from an old bush knife and second from right is a very unusual Abelam example with stacked ancestral faces and nice remains of red and yellow pigments. These are all exceptional individual examples dating to the 19th century. They range in height from 71” (180.3 cm) to 102 ¾” (261 cm) but are individually mounted to keep them at a relatively similar height as a group from 86” (218.4 cm) to 103” (261.7 cm). SOLD
