Marshall Island Navigation Chart-Rebbelib-Micronesian Art-Oceanic Art
Here is a small Marshall Island navigation chart known as a Rebbelib. Made using midribs of coconut fronds lashed together in a framework where cowry shells represent islands, and the lines correspond to the prevailing ocean swells running between them. The charts were memorized prior to a trip and not taken on the voyage itself. This one was collected in 1968 by American Peace Corps volunteers on Majuro Island in the Marshall Islands. It is 22 1/8” (56.2 cm) long, dates to the mid 20th century. SOLD
