Malekula Pig Killing Club-Tobias Schneebaum Collection-Melanesian Art-Oceanic Art
This Malekula Island, Vanuatu, pig sacrificing club comes from the collection of the late Tobias Schneebaum (see essay in PROVENANCE). While mostly known for his Asmat art collection Tobias also had a few select objects from other areas of Oceania. This club is an elegant older example with two fine ancestral faces with sensitively rendered noses deeply pierced. The pointed headdresses have subtle curves and soft undulations to them. The patina is dark, aged, and proper. The piece dates to the early 20th century or before, is 25” (63.5 cm) in height. SOLD
