Lake Sentani Wooden Dish-New Guinea Art-Oceanic Art-Fortess Collection
The art of Lake Sentani is one of the most accomplished and refined on the island of New Guinea. And some of the most accessible objects to encounter this art are the shallow oval carved wood dishes such as the present example. This one has the classic repetitive canted curvilinear spirals carved in relief, painted black with nice remains of white lime in-filling. The plate was part of the Leo Fortess Collection, dates to the 1920/30s, is 28 ¼" (71.6 cm) in height and sells for $2800.
